Boil water warning for B’ham Water Works customers in northwest Jefferson Co. affected by a main outage

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham Water Works is requiring a boil water warning for all customers affected by Friday morning’s main break in northwest Jefferson County.

Areas covered by the boil water warning include those in and around Forestdale, Sandusky, Pratt City, Lewisburg, Upper Coalburg, Coalburg, Mineral Springs, Pinkney City, Hayes Highland, Greenleas Heights, Smithfield Estates, Zion Heights, Westwood , Union Living Grove, Hillview, Adamsville, Fultondale, Adamsville, US Highway 78, Cherry Avenue, Tomahawk Drive and streets adjacent to Pratt Highway, Dugan Highway, Hibernian Street, Coalburg Road, Upper Coalburg Road, Heflin Avenue, Walker Chapel Road and Brookside Coalburg Street.

According to BWW, these customers should boil the water for at least three minutes before consumption and allow it to cool before use or use bottled water until further notice.

Officials say the boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food. Cooking kills bacteria or other organisms that may contain disease-causing organisms.

Crews expect water service to be restored later Friday or Friday evening. Once repairs are complete, BWW will test the water supply and notify the public when the boil water advisory is lifted.

The following Jefferson County schools closed Friday due to the outage:

  • Smaller high school
  • Small middle school
  • Smaller community school
  • UW Clemon Elementary School
  • Adamsville Elementary School
  • Brookville Elementary School
  • Fultondale Elementary School
  • South Hampton K-8

These are the only schools affected by the water outage. Other Jefferson County schools held classes as normal.
