The Border Patrol Union is responding to an investigation into senior border officials over ties to the tequila maker

LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) – The Border Patrol Union is responding to an investigation launched into a trip to Mexico by top executives that may or may not have crossed ethical lines.

Two Border Patrol agents are under investigation for a close relationship with distiller Francisco Javier Gonzalez, the grandson of the founder of Don Julio Tequila, according to NBC News.

In an interview with KGNS, Border Patrol Union President Hector Garza reiterated his support for one of the officials under investigation, Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens, and said he would await the outcome of the investigation.

At the center of the investigation is a tequila bottle with a Border Patrol logo that will be made for the agency’s 100th anniversary celebrations later this month.

From now on, the investigation will examine all relevant factors, said the union chairman.

“The details of what activities will take place in Guadalajara as part of this tequila project are unknown at this time,” Garza said. “We don’t know if it happened on duty or if it happened off duty. Again, this is being investigated, but I believe the taxpayer does not expect us to travel internationally for tequila projects.”

The Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting the investigation.
