Late EDM DJ and producer Avicii’s ex-girlfriend Emily Goldberg died on April 3 in La Jolla, California, at the age of 34, her obituary confirms. Goldberg was born on December 3, 1989 in Poway, California. Before her death, she revealed in her final Instagram post that she had been battling cancer for much of 2022 and 2023, although she also shared on May 24, 2023, “I’m cancer free now ๐Ÿ˜ท ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฉบโš•๏ธ๐Ÿš‘.”

Goldberg is survived by her parents, Julie and Sam Goldberg, and her brother, Aaron Goldberg. It’s unclear when she met her ex Avicii, whose real name is Tim Bergling, but the couple dated for two years before he tragically died in April 2018. A tribute to the “Wake Me Up” producer remains on Goldberg’s Instagram page, posted shortly after his death .

โ€œโ€˜Come on, baby, donโ€™t give up on us. Choose me and I will show you love.’ These are the lyrics to a song Tim wrote for me,โ€ she captioned the post. โ€œI wish I could have done them justice. In the two years we were together, he was my closest confidant and my best friend. Now I can’t look at Bear without knowing I’ll never see his face again. I’m still gathering my thoughts and thank you for all your kind words and texts. Wake me up when itโ€™s all over cause I donโ€™t want it to be real ๐Ÿ’” #ripavicii #avicii @avicii.โ€

Avicii died by suicide at the age of 28 while vacationing in Muscat, Oman. At the time, his rep confirmed the news in a statement to PEOPLE, saying, โ€œIt is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling. also known as Avicii. He was found dead this Friday afternoon local time, April 20, in Muscat, Oman.โ€

โ€œThe family is devastated and we ask everyone to respect their need for privacy during this difficult time,โ€ it added. โ€œNo further comments will be made.โ€

Two years before his death, Avicii announced his retirement from touring in a letter to fans on his website. It said: “We all reach a point in our lives and careers where we understand what is most important to us.” For me, it’s about making music. This is what I live for, this is what I think I was born for. I stopped performing live last year and many of you thought that was it. But the end of Live never meant the end of Avicii or my music. Instead, I went back to where it all made sense โ€“ the studio.โ€

โ€œThe next phase is all about my love of making music for you. Itโ€™s the start of something new,โ€ he concluded. โ€œI hope you like it as much as I do.โ€

In a 2013 interview with PEOPLE, the “Levels” hitmaker, who has suffered from chronic health issues, shared how his grueling touring schedule had affected his health, saying, “I’m tired, really tired.”

โ€œI’ve been at it since I was 17, 18 years old… I’m touring pretty much non-stop, 300 shows a year. It was very hectic,โ€ he added. โ€œThe (schedule) has been reduced a lot for the next few months and I won’t be doing that much, just doing a few promos, a few shows but no big tours. I need a break.”
