A new bill signed by Kansas’ governor will change driving restrictions

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A new bill signed by Gov. Laura Kelly on Friday makes it easier for Kansans to avoid a driver’s license suspension.

The governor’s office said in a news release that current law currently requires those who fail to comply with a traffic order to pay their fees in full within 30 days. If they fail to do so, their license will be revoked.

The new bill – Senate Bill 500 – allows courts to restrict, rather than suspend, certain people’s driver’s licenses so they can continue to drive to school, work and church while paying the fees they owe.

According to the bill, a person is ineligible for a restricted license if he or she has been convicted of driving with a suspended, revoked or revoked license more than three times or if his or her license has been revoked for a reason other than failure to appear.

The bill comes into force on January 1, 2025.
