Conor Benn has been provisionally suspended for a second time due to his failed drug test ahead of his doomed fight against Chris Eubank Jr.

Benn’s career was thrown into turmoil in October 2022 after he tested positive twice for the banned drug clomiphene in the lead-up to the fight. His interim ban was overturned by the independent National Anti-Doping Panel, but the British Boxing Board of Control and UK Anti-Doping appealed.

This appeal was successful and Benn’s suspension has now been reinstated. In a statement, the BBBoC said: “As UKAD has explained, the BBBoC can confirm that Conor Benn is subject to an interim ban preventing him from taking part in a competition, event or activity (or supporting another athlete in any capacity). prohibited.” organized, convened, sanctioned or recognized by the BBBoC or any other sport compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code.

“UKAD and BBBoC were successful in their respective appeals against a decision by an arbitrator of the independent National Anti-Doping Panel in July 2023 and Mr Benn’s interim suspension was reinstated by the Court of Appeal following these successful appeals.”

“As Mr Benn’s case is still before the independent National Anti-Doping Panel and the case is now being pursued in accordance with the UK anti-doping rules, the BBBoC is not in a position to make further public comment at this time to hand in.”

In February, Benn, who had repeatedly protested his innocence, won a unanimous decision against American Peter Dobson in Las Vegas and remained undefeated. The 27-year-old won his second consecutive fight in the USA by going 12 rounds for the first time in his career.

Ahead of the outcome of the UKAD and BBBoC appeals, Benn said: “I am disappointed at the news that an appeal has been lodged as both the WBC and the National Anti-Doping Board have already given me permission to continue my career without restrictions to continue.”
