Doctor accused of sexually assaulting patient at Missoula hospital

MISSOULA – A local doctor is accused of sexually abusing several patients in the emergency room at Community Medical Center in Missoula.

The Missoula County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday that criminal charges were filed against Dr. Tyler James Hurst was charged.

The charges were filed after several patients alleged that Hurst sexually assaulted them during their treatment in CMC’s emergency room in 2023.

Hurst is currently charged with sexual intercourse without consent, two misdemeanor counts of sexual assault and one felony count of sexual assault.

Hurst was employed by a local medical group that contracted with CMC, which revoked his clinical privileges.

The Missoula County District Attorney’s Office added that “the hospital has cooperated with the ongoing investigation.”

Community Medical Center released the following statement Thursday:

Community Medical Center was previously notified of a patient allegation regarding Dr. Tyler Hurst, an independent physician who practices in the emergency room at Community Medical Center. We removed Dr. Hurst from the facility and launched an independent investigation that ultimately terminated his medical staff membership and clinical privileges.

Our team is working with local law enforcement and notifying the appropriate authorities to investigate and resolve the matter. The safety of our patients is our top priority and we believe that patients should be encouraged to share their experiences and concerns. For data protection reasons, we cannot provide any further information at this time.

Hurst faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison in Montana State Prison if convicted of a felony, according to a news release.

If convicted of the misdemeanor, he faces up to 18 months in the Missoula County Detention Center.

Hurst also faces a maximum fine of $61,500.
