Man shot and killed by MPD officers, identified | News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The man shot by a Memphis Police (MPD) officer Friday morning has been identified.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Freeman Sherman Jr. was killed by an MPD officer in the 3000 block of Dumbarton Road around 3 a.m. Friday, May 10.

The TBI said two MPD officers responded to the home on Dumbarton Road after receiving reports of a stabbing. According to the TBI, Sherman was in an upstairs bedroom and was armed with several knives when officers arrived. The TBI said Sherman swung a knife at the officers, causing one of them to fall down the stairs. The other officer then opened fire, killing the 39-year-old man, the TBI said.

According to the TBI, one person was found stabbed inside the home and was hospitalized in critical condition. At 11:45 a.m., that person was still in the hospital. The officer who fell down the stairs suffered non-serious injuries and is expected to be OK.

A man who lives in the Scenic Hills community where the shooting occurred said he was surprised to see a police presence in his neighbor’s home, adding, “The thing that really grabbed me was that the Police flattened my garden.”

“This is not normal for our neighborhood,” said Gary McClain of the Scenic Hills Homeowner Association. “We have a very careful, very well-established, shared neighborhood.”

One person was shot by an officer during a domestic violence dispute in Raleigh on Friday morning, police said.

Memphis Police Department (MPD) confirmed that officers responded to the call in the 3000 block of Dumbarton Road just after 3 a.m. and found a wounded man inside the home.

Someone armed with a knife attacked the officers before one of the officers opened fire, striking the suspect, MPD said.
