Man killed in New Orleans shooting identified by coroner | Crime/Police

A man killed in a shooting in the French Quarter earlier this week has been identified by the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office as 26-year-old Juan Matthews.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, Matthews was struck by gunfire Sunday evening in the 500 block of Bienville Street, between Chartres and Decatur Streets. Officers found Matthews with at least one gunshot wound and EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police arrested a suspect, Reginald J. Batiste, on a charge of second-degree murder and booked him into the Orleans Parish Jail, police said in a news release Monday. Officers arrested Batiste at Rick’s Cabaret, a strip club on Bourbon Street, after he fled the scene on foot.

Authorities did not release any further information about the incident.
