Final Fantasy 14 suffers DDoS attack ahead of Dawntrail release

Final Fantasy 14 was subjected to a DDoS attack, but the issues appear to have now been resolved.

Yesterday, all data centers around the world experienced technical difficulties, including problems logging into the game or disconnecting. In a blog post, Square Enix said it was “investigating the attack and taking countermeasures.”

It appears the issue has now been resolved. This morning I had no problems logging in after a quick game update. Eurogamer has contacted Square Enix for confirmation.

Scheduled maintenance is due tomorrow morning UK time.

The DDoS attack (which overloads servers with data) takes place before the release of the next expansion, Dawntrail, in early July.

The release is expected to result in an influx of players across all servers, potentially causing further difficulties. In the previous expansion, Endwalker, queues were so long that players were offered free game time due to the long login times. It proved so popular that the game was even removed from sale.

Let’s hope this DDoS attack isn’t a harbinger of things to come. At least last week Square Enix announced the addition of a new European data center (Shadow) and three new worlds (Innocence, Pixie, Titania). Players will likely recognize the Shadowbringers references here.

The Shadow data center will be available after the planned maintenance mentioned above.

Dawntrail launches on July 2nd (June 28th Early Access) and promises to offer “the very best summer vacation.” It will be released for PC, PlayStation and Xbox Series X/S.

For PC gamers, you should check out the Dawntrail benchmark tool to see how it runs on your system – there’s a fix for that coming soon too.
