Man survives deadly avalanche that kills two other skiers

An avalanche accident in a remote part of Utah left two skiers dead and a third hospitalized on Thursday (May 9). The three skiers were near Lone Peak, which was recently hit by a late-season storm that dumped 30 inches of snow over the mountains. Officials said the terrain is dangerous and only suitable for advanced skiers.

Authorities received reports of the avalanche around 10 a.m. and sent a helicopter to try to find the group of skiers. After several hours, they discovered that two of the men, ages 23 and 32, had died, but their bodies could not be recovered due to conditions on the mountain.

Rescue workers managed to find the other man, who dug himself out and called for help. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Officials said crew members took damage control measures to make the area safe so they could recover the bodies of the two deceased men.

The Colorado Avalance Center said 15 people, including Thursday’s two, have died during the 2023-2024 season.
