Police recruit who lost both legs in “barbaric initiation ritual” sues Denver, paramedics and police officers

DENVER (AP) — A police recruit who had to have both legs amputated after repeatedly collapsing and losing consciousness during combat training at the Denver Police Academy is suing the city, officers and paramedics. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday, alleges that academy trainers forced Victor Moses to continue a “barbaric initiation ritual” after paramedics ignored warning signs of trouble. The lawsuit alleges that Moses has sickle cell anemia, which puts him at increased risk for medical complications from high-intensity training. It says he disclosed this in his application to the academy. The county hospital and district attorney’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Denver police declined comment due to the pending litigation.
