Detroit man in court for sexually abusing a minor

(CBS) — A 32-year-old man who police said entered the country illegally has been charged with allegedly sexually abusing a minor in the Detroit metropolitan area, authorities said.

According to the Macomb County District Attorney’s Office, Joel Quintana-Dominguez is said to have sexually abused the minor several times in Shelby Township.

He was charged with three counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a person under the age of 13, where the defendant was at least 17 years old. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Quintana-Dominguez was held on $500,000 bail and his probable cause hearing is scheduled for Thursday, August 1.

Prosecutors also say Quintana-Dominguez is subject to an immigration ban from the Department of Homeland Security.

“We thank the Shelby Township Police Department for their quick and decisive actions in arresting this defendant before he could evade justice,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “We want to express our deepest gratitude to the police department for their dedication and commitment to protecting our community and ensuring justice is served.”

Investigators said they tracked down and arrested Quintan-Dominguez at a trailer park in Macomb County. He apparently received a tip and was packing his belongings to leave the country, Shelby Township police said in a news release.

“I am disgusted and sickened after hearing the details of this case that Quintana-Dominguez is accused of,” Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide said in a statement. “I am also appalled that he was deported in the past and found his way back to the United States.”
