Another scam attempt has been reported that is currently circulating in Madison County.

The scammer calls and pretends to be Sheriff David Harper of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). He informs the victim that they have missed a court date and must pay money to avoid prosecution. The scammer advises that a warrant will be issued for the victim’s arrest if the money is not paid. The scammer may threaten that law enforcement will come to pick up the victim based on that warrant. This is a scam. Please remember that an MCSO employee will never call you and ask for money.

Here’s how you can protect yourself:

• If you are contacted by a company, firm or agency, hang up and call the company/firm/agency yourself to identify yourself.

• Never share personal or account information or passwords with anyone you do not know.

• Never pay or transfer money to an unknown person, either over the phone or on a computer.

If you believe you have been a victim of this or any other scam, call the MCSO at (850) 973-4001, extension 1.
