Odisha IPS officer suspended on charges of ‘forcibly entering woman inspector’s house’ | News from India

The Odisha state government on Tuesday suspended IPS officer Pandit Rajesh Uttamrao for “serious misconduct” after allegations emerged that he forcibly entered the house of a married woman inspector and misbehaved with her. The alleged incident took place on the night of July 27.

Pandit (51), a 2007 batch IPS officer, is currently posted as DIG, in the Fire Service and the Home Guard.

An order from the state home department said the DGP of Odisha had filed a confidential report against Pandit regarding the incident.

“Since disciplinary proceedings are contemplated against Shri Pandit Rajesh Uttamrao, IPS, for serious misconduct as a member of the Indian Police Service, the Government of Odisha hereby suspends the said Shri Pandit Rajesh Uttamrao, IPS, with immediate effect in exercise of the powers conferred on it by sub-rule (1) of rule 3 of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969,” the Home Ministry order said.

According to official sources, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who returned from New Delhi on Monday evening, was informed about the incident and ordered appropriate action.

No formal police complaint has been filed in connection with the alleged incident. According to police sources, the inspector’s husband was also assaulted, following which the IPS officer was taken away by police officials.

During the suspension, Pandit will be posted at the state police headquarters in Cuttack. He has been asked not to leave the headquarters without the permission of the Director General of Police, the Home Ministry order said.

Pandit could not be reached for comment.
