SOURCE SPORTS: MLB pitcher Reyes Moronta dies in motorcycle accident in Dominican Republic

Multiple reports have confirmed that Major League Baseball pitcher Reyes Moronta died this morning in a motorcycle accident in his native Dominican Republic. Moronta was 31 years old.

One of Moronta’s former teams in the Dominican Republic, Aguilas Cibaenas, first announced his death through his social media account.

“We deeply regret the unexpected passing of pitcher Reyes Moronta, who passed away yesterday.”

Moronta was riding his motorcycle in the municipality of Villa Gonzalez in the north of his home country on Sunday evening when the accident occurred.

“The Aguilas board, the baseball department and the players share the pain with his family and we pray for his eternal rest,” said the team.

The right-hander pitched for four different teams over the course of seven seasons, but his strongest performance on the mound came with the San Francisco Giants from 2017 to 2023. Moronta was one of the Goants’ best relief pitchers in 2018, striking out 149 batters in 125 total relief appearances, posting an ERA of 2.66.

Reyes suffered a shoulder injury the next year that caused him to miss the entire 2020 season before returning to San Francisco the following year. He posted a 3.05 overall ERA in 177 career games with the Giants, LA Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels, where he pitched two games last season before signing with Mexico’s Bravos De Leon earlier this year.

De Leon let Moronta go last week.
