The way the juices from the freshly grilled meat flow gently down your chin as you take that first bite into the succulent patty, seasoned to perfection. Something about the way the cheese curls along the sides, slowly melting into the goodness of the ground beef delicately placed between two buns.

While that something may always defy definition, what can be said with certainty is that America, and what seems to be the world, loves hamburgers.

Named after Hamburg, a region of Germany known for its livestock, Hamburg steak was the first step towards what would become the sandwich we know and love today. Served on a plate (without buns if you can believe that), steak is said to have become popular during the Industrial Revolution after the influx of German immigrants to New York. In order to make the food easier for workers to consume during their breaks, a now-unknown cook sandwiched the steak between two pieces of bread, and the rest, as they say, is history.
