Moscow: Ukrainian drones attack oil depot, 5 drones shot down over Russian Kursk region

According to Russian media reports, Ukraine launched a drone attack overnight on a Russian oil depot and other targets just beyond Ukraine’s northern border.

Authorities of Russia’s Kursk Oblast reported that they had successfully shot down air targets over the region. On the morning of Tuesday, July 30, Acting Governor Alexey Smirnov announced that during the night at least four AFU missiles were allegedly destroyed in the skies over the Oktyabrsky and Kurchatovsky districts of Kursk Oblast.

Three minutes after the explosion at 4:03 a.m., Smirnov reported a missile threat in Kursk Oblast.

It was later revealed that unknown drones had attacked an oil depot in Kursk Oblast, causing a fire in three tanks. According to preliminary reports, no one was injured. In addition, some witnesses reported explosions near the airport on social media.

Local residents told the Telegram channel that they heard an explosion and saw a bright flash in the sky above Kursk. The noise caused car alarms to go off in several districts.

The Russian Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted and destroyed five drones over Belgorod and two over the Kursk region overnight.

At the time of publication, there was no official comment on the situation from the Ukrainian side.

Attacks by Ukrainian drones on Russian fuel depots, refineries and energy facilities have become increasingly frequent, especially in the border regions. Kyiv has attacked dozens of Russian energy facilities and oil storage facilities over the past year and views these attacks as retaliation for Moscow’s airstrikes on Ukrainian cities and power plants.
