According to Pennsylvania State Police, the driver fell asleep before the accident that killed three workers

A box truck driver who struck and killed three workers on Interstate 83 in York County last month fell asleep at the wheel, according to Pennsylvania State Police. The accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. April 17 in the southbound lanes between Exit 35, Lewisberry, and Exit 36, Fishing Creek, in Fairview Township. PSP released a statement saying, in part, “(The driver) was driving at a high rate of speed,” more than what would be considered reasonable and prudent when entering an active work area and falling asleep, resulting in “he crashed into the right rear of a stationary impact absorber in the right lane,” state police said. The van then went onto the shoulder where it hit the three workers. All three workers were pronounced dead at the scene. They were later identified as: Jesse McKenzie, 24, of Somerset Robert Hampe, 42, of Meyersdale Philson Hinebaugh III, 24, of Johnstown Construction crews were working on a crack sealing project on this section of I-83. Work was due to begin on Monday, with teams working night shifts from 8pm to 6am. A previous press release for the project noted that there would be rolling lane closures during work hours and drivers should be alert and cautious. The accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. April 17 in the southbound lanes between Exit 35, Lewisberry, and Exit 36, Fishing Creek, in Fairview Township.

PSP released a statement saying, among other things:

“(The driver) drove at a speed exceeding what could be considered reasonable and prudent while entering an active work zone and fell asleep, causing him to crash into the right rear of a stationary truck with an impact attenuator , who was in the right lane,” state police said.

The van then went onto the shoulder where it hit the three workers. All three workers were pronounced dead at the scene.

They were later identified as:

  • Jesse McKenzie, 24, from Somerset
  • Robert Hampe, 42, of Meyersdale
  • Philson Hinebaugh III, 24, of Johnstown

Construction crews were working on a crack sealing project on this section of I-83. Work was due to begin on Monday, with crews working night shifts from 8pm to 6am

A previous press release for the project noted that taxi lane closures would occur during work hours and drivers should be alert and cautious.
