Five dead in mining accident in northern Vietnam

Five miners were killed in an accident at a coal mine in Quang Ninh province in northern Vietnam on Monday evening, the state-owned Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) reported on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at 10:10 p.m. in a mine owned by Hon Gai Coal Company, a subsidiary of Vinacomin.

The five workers were in the mine when coal and rock suddenly collapsed.

After receiving reports of the accident, Nguyen Xuan Ky, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People’s Council of Quang Ninh Province, instructed the relevant authorities to coordinate search and rescue efforts with Vinacomin.

The work ended on Tuesday at 05:28 a.m.

Vinacomin initially provided 20 million VND (795.6 million US dollars) to each family of the deceased. The group’s union also contributed 20 million VND per victim.

The Hon Gai Coal Company pledged to cover funeral expenses and offer VND100 million (US$3,973) in assistance to each family.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
