San Francisco Giants trade Jorge Soler to Atlanta Braves

Are the San Francisco Giants officially sellers?

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Giants have traded designated hitter Jorge Soler to the Atlanta Braves. Soler, 32, signed a three-year, $42 million contract with San Francisco last offseason.

The Giants will also send right-handed reliever Luke Jackson to Atlanta as part of the deal.

San Francisco acquires minor league infielder Sabin Ceballos and left-handed reliever Tyler Matzek, who is currently on the 60-day injured list with a shoulder injury.

Soler, the 2021 World Series MVP, and Jackson will both return to the Braves, where they won the 2021 Fall Classic against the Houston Astros in six games.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Braves will pay $13 million of Soler’s salary in 2025 and 2026, saving the Giants $26 million.

Soler was one of San Francisco’s most prized free agent signings heading into the 2024 season, but the Giants (53-55) haven’t had the start they hoped for and are currently four games out of the third and final National League wild card.

San Francisco was widely expected to sell to reduce its bloated cap sheet, and the unloading of Soler (.240 average, 12 HR, 40 RBI) could be a sign the Giants are making more moves.

Left-hander and reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell could be the next big name to move, as San Francisco would benefit from not having to pay his $30 million player option in 2025.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported Monday that he believes there is a “greater than 50% chance” Snell will be traded before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. PDT trade deadline.
