Locals can now sign up by email or phone number for Vandenberg Space Force Base’s new push launch notification system, which provides information and updates on scheduled launches.

The 19th annual Lompoc Empty Bowls event will be held Wednesday at the Dick Dewees Community Center, where the public is invited to enjoy an afternoon of soup and breaking bread while helping to combat food insecurity in the community.

There are two seating times available: 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the lunch soup drive benefit programs and services of the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County that serve vulnerable populations in Lompoc, including the elderly and U.S. veterans and active duty military who rely on outside resources to meet their daily needs.

Last year, Empty Bowls attracted 300 participants and met its goal of raising $50,000 to benefit local food programs.

Following tradition, guests choose from a collection of handmade ceramic bowls and sample a selection of gourmet soups with a side of bread.

The DeWees Community Center is located at 1120 West Ocean Ave.

Applications are now being accepted for the 37th annual Leadership Lompoc Valley program, offering participants the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in the local community.

The 2025 program begins on October 11 and 12 with a mixer and a one-day retreat with team-building activities.

Participants explore Lompoc and connect with local leaders during a series of workshop days from November to May, covering topics such as public safety, local government, media and communications, education, business, military and aerospace, among others.

The theme days include guest speakers, expert panels and tours of local companies and agencies.

The application deadline is Friday, September 6th.

Tuition is $700 and covers all program costs and meals. Employers can cover the cost, and partial scholarships are available for those who need financial assistance.

According to organizers, participants are selected by the Leadership Lompoc Valley board based on their commitment and interest in the community, as well as their interest in developing their leadership skills.

The Lompoc High School Alumni Association is selling raffle tickets for a half-ton of oak. The raffle is part of an effort to raise money for the Alumni Association’s scholarship fund.

The draw will take place on September 6th and the wood will be delivered locally.

Tickets cost $5 each or $20 for a book of five copies.
