Protesters gather outside Macomb police station after fatal police-involved incident

A community is demanding answers after a police-involved shooting resulted in the death of a four-year-old boy.

On March 16, Macomb Police were called to a domestic incident. When they arrived, the suspect had two knives and fired a single shot, killing a 4-year-old child and the suspect. The State Police investigation is now complete.

The protest began at 11:00 a.m. in Macomb, and as the public gathered, they made their way to the Macomb Police Department for a press conference at around 1:00 p.m.

The mother, Keianna Miller, and her attorney, Marleen Suarez, released to the public a summary of the events of the night of March 16.

Miller and the protesters agree that the police officer who fired the shot acted recklessly.

“We are here to show that we do not support this decision. That we believe the police officer acted recklessly and that some sort of criminal charges should be filed against him,” Suarez said.

This is not the end. We will get our justice. I don’t care how long it takes, we will get our justice. And if I have to go all the way to the Supreme Court, I will,” Miller said.

After the protest, around 2 p.m., KHQA went to the Macomb Police Department’s main office for comment, but was asked to contact Police Chief Jef Hamer.

Over an hour later, at 4 p.m., Macomb police said in part: “While the decision to release this footage is driven by our commitment to transparency, our hearts and thoughts are with the families affected by this tragedy. We will provide further updates periodically until the internal investigation is complete.”

Miller’s lawyer, Marleen Suarez, plans to file a civil lawsuit and is asking authorities to re-examine the case.
