One of the best places in the world to visit is in Buffalo, New York.

It’s been a year since the renovated, remodeled, reimagined and reinvigorated Albright Knox Art Museum reopened as the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, bringing the art world’s attention to the Queen City with a dazzling new home for contemporary art.

The rest of the world is also taking notice, as the museum was just included in Time magazine’s list of the world’s most beautiful places for 2024.

The revitalized museum, “10 years and $230 million in the making,” Time notes, welcomed visitors for the first time in June 2023 with “a stunning canopy of mirrors and glass—a collaboration between the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and the German architect Sebastian Behmann… For the grand return, the museum has thrown its curatorial weight behind exhibitions of abstract artists by the likes of Clyfford Still, the painter Stanley Whiteny, and a cultural installation by Lucals Samaras; the next blockbuster show, opening in July, is a traveling retrospective of the Venezuelan-American pop artist Marisol.”

The article goes on to note that the museum reopened at a “particularly vibrant time” for Buffalo, with investments in the Richardson Hotel and Richardson-Olmsted complex, the popular West Side Bazaar and other cultural highlights.

Founded in 1862, the museum is one of the oldest art institutions in the United States. More than 325,000 visitors have toured the collections and exhibitions since it reopened last year.
