Hillsboro school board suspends high school football coach

Four Hillsboro school football coaches were suspended following a special school board meeting Thursday due to an “off-school incident,” the Journal-News reported Monday.

Head coach Joe Reed, who is entering his fourth season as coach, is suspended for the first six games of the season – including preseason practice – while assistant coaches Zach Reed, Bill Reed and Ryan Lipe are each suspended for four games.

Hillsboro Superintendent David Powell said in a phone interview with the State Journal-Register on Monday that he does not expect an interim coach to be named during Joe Reed’s suspension and expects assistants to rotate their suspensions so they can fulfill their coaching duties during that period.

Powell declined to comment further on the incident that led to the suspensions, but said no current students were involved.

Joe Reed led the Hiltoppers to the Class 3A playoffs in 2022.
