Driver Files Complaint Against NYSDOT Over Construction Zone Speed ​​Camera on Route 198

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — After hearing the voices of neighbors frustrated by construction zone speed cameras on the Scajaquada Expressway, one driver is taking action.

“I have received no response from the government officials I have informed of this situation, so I thought the best thing to do was to file a complaint for breach of public integrity,” said Patrick Freeman, who was recently issued a ticket.

In the complaint, he lists four problems with the cameras:

1. Lack of signage
2. Cameras operating without workers present on site
3. Changing speed from 50 mph to 30 mph
4. No changes on the highway, creating a daily traffic nightmare

“There’s not enough signage, it doesn’t tell you where it is. If you’re sitting at the light and you turn left, you don’t know it’s there until you get there,” said Kenny Vaughan, who was recently ticketed.

Freeman’s solution is to stop these cameras from operating without signage and to refund all tickets issued.

A NYSDOT spokesperson referred 7 News to an earlier statement.

“The Department of Transportation is not here to trick you, we are here to keep you safe, and we will continue to do everything in our power to keep our workers safe,” Susan Surdej wrote in the statement.

She says drivers have been recorded going up to 80 mph in these work zones and motorists need to slow down, pay attention and do their part.
