Uttar Pradesh: 85-year-old woman dies after alleged rape in Bareilly | Latest news from India

An 85-year-old woman died after she was raped at her house in Hafizganj in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, police said.

Police have arrested the 35-year-old accused named Rakesh, who lives in the neighbourhood.

Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya said the victim was living alone after the death of her husband and son. The woman’s brother and sister-in-law live in the neighbourhood and her daughter-in-law lives with them.

According to the daughter-in-law, she was stunned when she came to the victim’s house around 1 pm and saw Rakesh raping her mother-in-law, Arya said.

Police said that when the daughter-in-law raised the alarm, the accused fled and the family immediately informed the police. The old woman has since died after the attack.

The police arrived at the scene and were able to arrest the defendant.

Arya said the accused was an alcoholic and was being interrogated.

A committee was appointed to perform the woman’s autopsy.
