The 23-year-old, who has made four appearances for the Japanese national team since making his debut for the team last November, was arrested along with two other men in their 20s on suspicion of involvement in the alleged attack in Tokyo.

“I sincerely apologize to the victim for my actions, which have caused great distress,” Sano said in a statement through his management company. “I take the consequences of my actions seriously and will endeavor to restore trust.”

Sano moved from J-League club Kashima Antlers to Mainz in the German Bundesliga on a four-year contract on July 3.

The defensive midfielder was part of the Samurai Blue squad for the Asian Cup, which took place in Qatar from January to February.
