WESTPORT – A New York driver rammed the back of a state police patrol car at the accident scene near Exit 17 southbound on Interstate 95 early Saturday morning.

The police officer dispatched to investigate the accident was outside the patrol car at the time of the collision and was not injured, the report said.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday when an officer from State Police Troop G in Bridgeport was dispatched to investigate a collision on I-95 near Exit 17 southbound.

According to the state police report, the patrol car was parked in the left lane of the highway with its hazard lights on.

While the officer was investigating the incident, he noticed that a Kia Sorrento driven by 47-year-old Sonny Abdul-Hardy of the Bronx, New York, southbound in the left lane failed to slow down and swerved to the right, striking the rear of the patrol car, police said.

The police officer was not injured. Abdul-Hardy was examined at the scene and his injuries appeared to be minor, police said.

Both vehicles suffered severe damage and were towed from the scene of the accident.

Abdul-Hardy was charged with failing to maintain an appropriate distance between the two vehicles, resulting in a traffic accident, and failing to yield to emergency vehicles.
