Two dead after nighttime fire in Otisfield

A section of Route 121 in Otisfield was closed Monday morning as firefighters were called to a house fire that killed two people. The fire started around 11:20 p.m. Sunday. Two people were inside the home when firefighters arrived, and authorities said no one was found outside the home. None of the first responders were injured. Firefighters from several surrounding towns helped fight the fire, and investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were also called in. Deputy Chief Ryan Fox said this was one of the largest fires the department has fought in Otisfield. “This is the largest fire Otisfield has seen in a long time. Water was a big problem,” Fox explained. “We ended up calling in a fuel stop at the town beach, and Smith Brook down the road had two tanker trucks out. There were about 13 different towns here.” By 9 a.m., an excavator was helping demolish what was left of the building and haul away some of the debris. The fire was just down the street from the Otisfield Fire Department and Spurr’s Corner Church. The road was closed between Powhatan Road and Bolsters Mills Road. The road was reopened around 10:30 a.m.
