Chatham County Sheriff’s Office warns of leg monitor scam

SAVANNAH, Georgia (WSAV) – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is issuing a warning about a leg monitor scam targeting the loved ones of incarcerated individuals.

According to CCSO, scammers pose as police officers, probation officers, courts or legal entities and demand money over the phone.

CCSO recommends considering the following important points:

1. We do not solicit money by telephone:

The The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office will never request payment over the phone. Be cautious of calls claiming to be from law enforcement or related agencies asking for money.

2. Check before taking action:

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately. Use official contact information to verify the legitimacy of the call with the agency.

3. Don’t buy prepaid cards:

Scammers often ask their victims to buy prepaid cards and send the money. This is a red flag. Never send money using prepaid cards or other untraceable methods.

Protect yourself and your loved ones:

Always confirm the identity of the caller by contacting the agency directly. Inform your family and friends about this scam to prevent them from becoming victims.
