South African teacher killed in front of his students in shocking incident in Durban – Firstpost

A South African teacher was killed in front of her primary school students near the coastal city of Durban, the latest incident to shock the crime-ridden country, local authorities said on Monday.

According to the provincial government, the 46-year-old was called out of her classroom by two armed men and shot on the spot as she left the classroom.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial education department in Durban said it was “with deep sadness to confirm that a teacher was tragically killed by gunfire.”

It called for a speedy investigation “to ensure justice is done.”

Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The teacher was killed on Monday morning at Phikiswayo Primary School in Ntuzuma, a township about 25 kilometers northwest of the port city.

Primary school students in South Africa are typically between six and 13 years old.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of a dedicated educator,” said Provincial Education Minister Sipho Hlomuka.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and school community during this devastating time.”

South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world. According to official figures, almost 84 murders were recorded per day between October and December last year.

The authorities said that those affected would be offered social support at the school. They called on anyone with information to contact the police.
