KEARNEY — The chief of the Kearney Police Department responded to a video circulating on social media regarding an arrest that occurred at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds on Thursday, July 25.

Chief Bryan Waugh said the arrest was related to an adult male involved in a reported physical disturbance and assault at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds.

“In accordance with Kearney Police Department policy, any response to resistance by members of the Kearney Police Department, which includes the use of force to effect a lawful arrest of the subject, is carefully considered,” Waugh said.

“Our officers are trained to use the least amount of force possible to make a lawful arrest, while defending themselves and others. I have confidence in our professional police officers and the process we have in place to achieve this goal,” Waugh said.

“This incident was captured on multiple Kearney Police body cameras. Officers are required to report any use of force, which is reviewed through the chain of command. This case is no different, I appreciate your patience as this process concludes.”
