French fiber optic cables hit by ‘serious sabotage’ in second Olympic attack – POLITICO

A spokesperson for Iliad, Free’s parent company, said six of France’s 101 districts were affected by the slowdown. Paris, where most Olympic events are taking place, is not affected.

Police confirmed to AFP news agency that the affected regions are Bouches-du-Rhône, Aude, Oise, Hérault, Meuse and Drôme.

“Last night, our telecommunications operators in several departments suffered damage,” said outgoing Secretary of State for Digital Affairs Marina Ferrari. “I condemn these cowardly and irresponsible acts.”

Online monitoring service DownDetector recorded an increase in problems and outages among major French service providers.

On Friday, large parts of the French railway network were affected by a coordinated arson attack. Outgoing Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on Monday that the authorities had identified the “profiles” of people who may have been behind the attack. He added that the sabotage was similar to “the modus operandi of the ultra-left”, but the question was “whether these people were manipulated by others or were acting in their own name”.
