Nancy Pelosi was “shocked” when she learned of the attack on her husband Paul, she tells CNN

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told CNN she was “very scared” when she was awakened by Capitol Police banging on her door and telling her her husband had been attacked.

Pelosi, a Democrat from California, was sleeping when Capitol Police repeatedly pounded on her apartment door in Washington, DC, around 5 a.m. on October 28. Paul Pelosi had been attacked by a man with a hammer in her San Francisco home and was hospitalized with a fractured skull.

“So I run to the door and I’m very scared,” Pelosi told “Anderson Cooper 360.” “I see the Capitol Police and they say, ‘We need to come in to talk to you.'”

Nancy Pelosi described how she immediately became worried about her children and grandchildren.

“I never thought it would be Paul because I knew he wouldn’t be out, let’s say,” Pelosi told CNN. “And that’s how they came in. At that point, we didn’t even know where he was.”

Paul Pelosi, 82, was released from San Francisco General Hospital on Thursday after undergoing surgery for a skull fracture and injuries to his right arm and hand.

The suspect, David DePape, 42, was jailed on six federal charges, including attempted murder, elder abuse and burglary. He has pleaded not guilty.

DePape also faces charges of assaulting a relative of a federal official and attempting to kidnap a federal official.
