A wave of discontent is sweeping social media as Nigerian youths express their outrage over the premiere of BBNaija season 9, which is scheduled to coincide with the much-anticipated nationwide protests against economic hardship.

The #EndBadGovernance protest, which will take place from August 1 to 10, 2024, aims to put an end to the terrible hunger and high inflation in the country.

Meanwhile, the new season of BBNaija will debut on Sunday, July 28, 2024 and will last for 10 weeks, with the grand finale airing on October 6, 2024.

The coincidence of these two significant events has sparked fierce criticism from internet users, who claim that the broadcast of the show represents an unacceptable distraction from the most pressing socio-economic challenges.

Kingsley Thompson, a prominent human rights activist known on X as @Jkings, has slammed the scheduling of the BBNaija debut.

He argues that the show’s debut at a crucial time in the national movement reveals a disturbing discrepancy between youth priorities.

Thompson, speaking for many who share his view, is calling for the reality TV show to be suspended this year, claiming that given the severity of the current economic crisis, the nation should focus on fleeting entertainment.

His words;

“The introduction of BBN at this critical moment in our country shows how we have misplaced our priorities.

“I speak for all Nigerians: BBN should cancel its show this year, we don’t want that.”

Others strongly supported his call for the suspension of BBNaija and strongly attacked the organisers, accusing them of deliberately diverting the attention of the youths from important issues.
