A first responder is home recovering after being struck by a car while redirecting traffic following a crash in Crawford County.

A post on the North Shenango Fire Department’s Facebook page said the ambulance was struck Sunday at the intersection of Hartstown and Fries roads near the Pymatuning Lake Spillway while directing traffic. The car that struck the ambulance fled the scene.

The post also rebuked those who drove around the cones that blocked off the road so firefighters could return and help accident victims:

Some then decided it was important to have our workers stop what they were doing so they could berate them for closing the roads. Trust me, we don’t close roads without a good reason… folks, this could have turned out very differently. Please don’t ignore traffic closures. You never have to get to a place that is more important than our workers returning home safely to their families.

The injured firefighter was examined in a hospital and subsequently released.
