Three people were arrested after a shooting in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Three men were arrested Thursday night after a fight led to a shooting in New Haven.

According to police, officers responded to a report of shots fired on Central Avenue between Fountain Street and Willard Street around 11:27 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found several people fighting.

The investigation revealed that 32-year-old Richard Smith confronted his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend at his home when a fight broke out. Police said the victim was in possession of a weapon at the time of the fight.

A third man, a relative of the victim, was then involved in the fight. As all three men struggled for control of the gun, two shots were fired. Police said an additional shot was fired as the fight continued on the street.

All three men were arrested and Smith was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
