North Carolina high school student killed in box truck crash

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Pitt County Schools confirmed Thursday that a JH Rose High School student died in a car accident.

The car accident occurred Wednesday when a commercial box truck struck the back of a car on NC 11 South in Winterville. The accident affected both lanes and caused a traffic jam that stretched for kilometers.


Tom McClellan with Pitt County Schools confirmed Thursday that a local high school student involved in the crash has died from his injuries. No names were released about who the student was or whether anyone else was involved.

Also Thursday, Winterville Police Chief Christopher L. Williams confirmed the accident occurred Wednesday at 4:10 p.m. Officers were dispatched to the scene along with the Winterville Fire Department and the NC State Highway Patrol. Three people were removed from the car and taken to ECU Health Medical Center.

Officials said the driver of the commercial box truck was checked and released pending a joint investigation by Winterville police and the Highway Patrol. No charges had been announced as of Thursday morning.
