At least one person died and six others were injured in a mass shooting in a park in Rochester, New York, on Sunday evening, July 28, police said. The deceased person is believed to be in his 20s, and another person is in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that five other people were hospitalized with minor injuries.

The shooting occurred at around 6:20 p.m. in Maplewood Park, the New York Post reported, according to Rochester police. The park was crowded at the time of the incident, with people barbecuing and enjoying the weather. An alleged video of the incident shared on social media showed the chaotic scene causing the crowd to run for their lives.

“We are looking for more than one person”

Who the suspect or suspects were is currently unclear. “At this point, we don’t know how many people were shooting,” Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello said during a press conference published by Rochester First. “We’re trying to figure that out. We’re trying to interview as many witnesses as we can.”

Police said they are searching for multiple shooters, but it is unclear how many shooters opened fire.

“We are looking for more than one person. I cannot determine or quantify whether they were part of this gathering or came from outside,” said Rochester Police Chief David Smith. The identity of the deceased victim was not immediately known.

Authorities have investigated the crime scene. Bello urged people who were in the park to show police any videos they may have taken.

“Anyone who decides to pull out a gun on a Sunday afternoon when everyone is outside grilling and having fun, for whatever reason, whether it’s an argument, short term, long term, whatever,” Bello said. “Someone who has a gun pulled out, that’s obviously incredibly unacceptable in our society.”

Smith warned: “The people who did this will be seen.”
