Residents mourn Sonya Massey and push for better relations with police

Charlotte leaders and organizations come together to improve cooperation with the police

CHARLOTTE, NC — In Charlotte, people gathered in solidarity to remember Sonya Massey, the woman who was shot and killed by a police officer in Illinois.

Officials, organizations and community members paid their final respects to Massey at a vigil in Marshall Park.

Massey’s death was also mourned in other parts of the country and the importance of improving cooperation between law enforcement and the public was stressed.

“We just need to come together, look at what’s happening and start making some changes,” said Sevhn Robinson, a local resident who attended the event.

“We could resolve the conflict the same way they did,” said Stephanie Harrison, a member of the Stop Killing Our Children support group. “Maybe that could lead to some kind of agreement between the two.”

“We will keep going. We will keep moving forward,” said Charlotte City Council member Tiawana Brown. “We will keep mobilizing and coming together. We will get the change we seek because we are fighting, and today is a fight. And when we fight, we move.”
