PORTLAND, Oregon (COIN) — A man has been summoned to court on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after his car collided with a police car in Gresham early Sunday morning.

At around 1 a.m., the driver of a Ford Mustang crashed into a “marked police car” near East Burnside Street, west of 162nd Avenue. The police car was unmanned but was parked with its emergency lights on to “block traffic for the investigation of another traffic accident,” police said.

According to a Gresham Police spokesperson, no one was in the police vehicle at the time, but the driver was evaluated by medical personnel at the hospital after the airbag deployed. The driver, a 21-year-old Gresham resident, was issued a summons to appear in court rather than be arrested.

One reason for not sending the driver to prison after an examination at the hospital was the fact that “protest activities in the city center affected the prison’s capacity,” authorities said.

This is a developing story. KOIN 6 News will update this article as more information becomes available.
