30 Afghan and Nepalese refugees injured in traffic accident in Serbia

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Serbia has announced that at least 30 refugees from Afghanistan and Nepal were injured when a vehicle overturned in the southeast of the country.

Serbian state media RTS reported that the accident occurred on Friday, July 26, near the border with Bulgaria and the town of Blace, in the town of Blapanjka.

According to reports, these refugees, citizens of Afghanistan and Nepal, are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

Previously, similar traffic accidents and shootings in Serbia had killed or injured numerous refugees.

According to reports, illegal migration from Serbia to European countries has increased, with the number of migrants reaching around 1,500 per day.

Serbia is located on the Balkan route and is an important transit point for migrants from the Middle East, including Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nepal, on their way to Europe.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), about 100,000 refugees used this route to reach Europe in 2023.

The plight of Afghan refugees extends beyond Serbia’s borders and also affects neighboring countries and Europe more broadly. Many refugees face harsh conditions and forced deportations, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The lack of adequate support and protection forces them into increasingly dangerous and precarious situations.

The situation is also dramatic in Europe: many countries are struggling with the challenge of managing and accommodating the influx of refugees, while at the same time facing the complex challenges of forced deportations.

This crisis underscores the urgent need for comprehensive international cooperation and humanitarian assistance to meet the immediate needs of displaced people and find long-term solutions.
