Driver dies when pickup truck leaves South Carolina road and rolls over, cops say

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one person was killed Saturday evening when a pickup truck went off the road and crashed.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 8:40 p.m. in Orangeburg County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

A 2008 Toyota pickup was traveling north on SC 453, Ridgeway said. Near Eutaw Road, the pickup went off the left side of SC 453 and into a ditch, causing it to overturn, Ridgeway said.

According to Ridgeway, the driver died at the scene of the accident.

No further injuries were reported.

There was no information about whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Information on why the pickup truck left the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, at least 502 people have died on South Carolina roads through July 21, 2024. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, according to DPS.

According to DPS data, at least 22 people died in crashes in Orangeburg County in 2024. In 2023, 36 deaths were reported in the county, DPS said.
