Live updates on UPSC Delhi Coaching Centre flooding, July 28: Following the death of three students after the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar was flooded, the National Commission for Women on Sunday summoned AAP MP from the constituency Durgesh Pathak. Taking note of the incident in a post on X, the NCW said the “allegations of ignored appeals to clean the drains” were worrying and a hearing has been scheduled for August 2. This came after the BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj claimed that Pathak was informed about the drain leak problem on July 22 but “did nothing about it.”

Meanwhile, a team of MCD officials has arrived in the area to seal basements of coaching centres operating illegally, news agency PTI reported. The civic body has also set up a high-level committee to investigate the incident. Earlier today, Delhi Police arrested Rau’s IAS coordinator and the building owner for wilful killing. Police have also asked Delhi Fire Service to submit a report on the building and the basement, which is used as a library. The completion certificate for the building states that permission has been granted for the coaching centre only for construction of two staircases, two lifts and two lift vestibules, one parking bay, one car lift and one domestic storage in the basement.

How did the students get into the trap? The incident occurred after a nearby drain burst, killing Shreya Yadav (from UP), Nivin Dalwin (from Kerala) and Tanya Soni (from Telangana), police confirmed. According to eyewitnesses, the basement was submerged 3-4 metres under water in no time, leaving the students with no chance of escaping. A faculty member also said that an emergency call was made to 112 when the flooding started, but due to traffic congestion, rescue teams arrived late. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has ordered city-wide action against similar coaching centres that violate building norms by running commercial activities in basements.
