Houston Astros receive major injury news on Justin Verlander

While most of the attention around the Houston Astros has focused on pursuing a trade for a starting pitcher before the MLB trade deadline, they are also on the verge of getting a massive player back from injury.

Justin Verlander, who hasn’t pitched since June 9, is close to returning to the field.

According to information shared by MLB.comVerlander recently threw more than 50 pitches in the bullpen before his team’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The news signals that a return to the field could be coming soon for the 41-year-old star.

Manager Joe Espada spoke out and also provided an update on his veteran star.

“I think it’s premature to say whether we’re ready to send (Verlander), but I’m very encouraged by where both players are right now.”

The “both” part of that quote refers to Verlander and fellow pitcher Luis Garcia.

Verlander has only appeared in 10 games so far this season. He has gone 3-2 in those starts, with a 3.95 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 3.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 57.0 innings pitched.

If Verlander can return to full health and return to the mound, he would be a huge boost to an Astros team trying to make a run in the American League West.

Dana Brown, the team’s general manager, has been vocal about his desire to make a trade for an impact starter. Verlander, combined with a trade for an outfield pitcher, would be just what’s needed to take the rotation to the next level.

Looking around the league, there are plenty of impact starting pitchers available. Some names have been linked to trade rumors like Erick Fedde, Jameson Taillon, and Blake Snell.

Expect to hear more from Verlander in the coming days. He is close to making his return and should be back on the field in the near future.

Also keep a close eye on trade talks as the MLB trade deadline approaches. Houston is looking to be aggressive and clearly wants to upgrade its rotation in an effort to push for a serious challenge at the end of the regular season.
