Freos Fyfe banned and fined numerous times after heated derby

Two-time Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe was suspended for one match for a punch, while 14 players on West Coast and Fremantle were fined for a brawl at the centre of a heated western derby.

Fyfe is expected to miss top-four contenders Fremantle’s crucial clash with Essendon at the MCG on Sunday due to his high off-ball shot on West Coast’s Jai Culley.

His punch in the second quarter of the Dockers’ 35-point win at Optus Stadium on Saturday was ruled as high physical contact, intentional conduct and low impact and resulted in a one-week suspension.

Eagles speedster Jack Petruccelle and mid-season draft pick Jack Hutchinson were both suspended for one game for rough conduct towards Fremantle ruckman Sean Darcy and Andrew Brayshaw respectively.

Both incidents were classified as negligent conduct, medium impact and high physical contact.

Fourteen players from both teams, including Freo star Brayshaw and West Coast co-captain Oscar Allen, were fined for involvement in a brawl/wrestling incident in the third quarter.

Elsewhere, talented young Gold Coast defender Bodhi Uwland was given a one-match suspension for rough conduct (careless conduct, medium impact, high contact) against Brisbane Lions star Lachie Neale.

AFL Rising Star league favourite George Wardlaw remains eligible for the prestigious award despite being reprimanded by the league’s match commissioner for tripping.

Wardlaw, from North Melbourne, was charged after he extended his right leg and tripped Geelong’s Shaun Mannagh during Saturday’s collision in Hobart.

The incident occurred in the second quarter of the Kangaroos’ 40-point loss and was classified as intentional conduct, low impact and physical contact.

The grading resulted in Wardlaw being fined $2,500, while a suspension would have eliminated him from the race for the Rising Star title.

Former contestants Harley Reid and Sam Darcy are both ineligible to compete after being banned earlier this season.

Their bans sparked a heated debate over the terms and conditions for the Rising Star title, with AFL football chief Laura Kane rejecting widespread calls to allow banned players to take part in the games.

Wardlaw remains the favourite for this year’s award ahead of teammate Colby McKercher, Cats sensation Oliver Dempsey and Melbourne’s Caleb Windsor.
