Nigerian boxer Ogunsemilore provisionally suspended from Olympics

Ogunsemilore tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic on the WADA banned list

PARIS:

Nigerian lightweight boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore was provisionally suspended on Saturday after testing positive for a banned substance ahead of her opening bout at the Paris Olympics, the International Testing Agency said.

During an out-of-competition doping test on Thursday, Ogunsemilore tested positive for the diuretic furosemide, which is on the WADA banned list.

“The athlete has been informed of the case and provisionally suspended in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules pending the resolution of the matter,” the ITA said.

“This means that the athlete will not be allowed to compete, train, coach or participate in any other activities during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

“The athlete has the right to appeal the imposition of the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport – Anti-Doping Division. The athlete also has the right to request the analysis of the B sample.”

The Commonwealth Games bronze medalist and African Games champion was due to face Taiwan’s Wu Shih Yi in a round of 16 match on Tuesday.
