34-year-old driver arrested for stalking, harassing and stabbing former employer at her south Mumbai apartment | Mumbai News

A 34-year-old man was arrested by Gamdevi police on Friday for stalking, harassing and attacking his former employer with a knife at her seaside home in south Mumbai. Police said the accused threatened the 44-year-old woman and other local residents who tried to rescue her and struck her with his knife.

Police said the accused, a man named Deepak Dubey, who had previously worked as a driver at the woman’s residence, was expelled from the city in 2023 after she filed four FIRs and a number of non-criminal offences against him for allegedly harassing her after her dismissal.

According to police, the complainant lives in South Mumbai with her husband, in-laws and two children. They run a family business. “The woman’s family had hired Dubey as a driver in 2015 and in the initial months, the complainant said he was honest in his work. However, after that, he started drinking alcohol and came to work drunk,” said a police officer.

At first, the plaintiff did not take any action against Dubey, but merely warned him and did not let him drive. However, when his behavior did not improve, she fired him, according to police. “When he left, Dubey threatened that she would have to face the consequences of his termination,” the officer added.

He then allegedly started stalking and harassing her and her mother-in-law. The family had filed complaints and FIRs in 2018, 2022 and 2023. Several non-criminal offences were also registered against Dubey.

Based on the complaints and FIRs, the Gamdevi police had banned him from the city limits in mid-2023. As per banishment rules, the police initiate banishment proceedings against a person or persons to keep them away from their familiar environment where they have been committing numerous criminal activities and terrorizing people. If a criminal is banned from Mumbai, he is also not allowed to enter adjoining districts like Thane, Raigad and Palghar.

“Every time he came out of prison, he would go and harass the complainant. This time he went to her house with a knife and attacked her,” the officer said.

On Wednesday, Dubey posed as a delivery boy and went to the complainant’s house at 7.30 pm. “He had earlier sent abusive and threatening messages to the complainant on July 10,” the officer said.

On Wednesday, police said, the accused went to the woman’s house and started abusing her. He then threatened to harm her family for filing a complaint against him. “Dubey then pulled out a knife from his pocket and when he attacked her inside the house, a servant tried to intervene. But he threatened him with the knife and due to the noise, other residents gathered near their house, after which he struck them with his knife and fled,” an investigating officer said.

The woman reported the incident to the police, following which a case was registered under sections 78 (stalking), 319 (2) (fraud by impersonation), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) of the BNS and 67 of the Information Technology Act. “We managed to trace and arrest him,” an official said.

According to police, the accused was brought before the court on Friday and remanded in custody until Monday.
