ITA suspends Nigerian boxer Ogunsemilore due to positive substance test

  • The provisional suspension comes ahead of her opening fight at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Nigerian lightweight boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore has been suspended from participating in the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris.

She was suspended by the International Testing Agency on Saturday after she tested positive for a banned substance.

The provisional suspension comes ahead of her opening fight at the Olympic Games in Paris.

During an out-of-competition doping test on Thursday, Ogunsemilore tested positive for the diuretic furosemide, which is on the WADA banned list.

The ITA stated: “The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules pending the resolution of the matter.”

This means that the athlete will not be allowed to compete, train, coach or participate in any other activities during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“The athlete has the right to appeal the imposition of the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport – Anti-Doping Division. The athlete also has the right to request the analysis of the B sample.”

The Commonwealth Games bronze medalist and African Games champion was scheduled to face Taiwan’s Wu Shih Yi in a round of 16 match on Tuesday.
