Hibbing man killed in ATV crash – Duluth News Tribune

BALKAN TOWNSHIP – A 31-year-old Hibbing man has died after being a passenger in an ATV accident Saturday afternoon.

According to a news release from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were dispatched to a hiking trail in Balkan Township between the cities of Chisholm and Buhl at 3:40 p.m. Saturday.

Officers found a side-by-side ATV upright, but with roof damage consistent with a rollover. Both the 29-year-old male driver from Chisholm and his passenger were ejected from the machine and were not wearing seat belts or helmets. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was taken to University Medical Center Mesabi – Fairview in Hibbing, treated and released.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

Our newsroom occasionally reports under the name “Staff.” The “Staff” name is often used when rewriting basic news briefs from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure that requires little or no reporting. Sometimes this name is used when a story has multiple authors or when the story consists of compiling previously reported news from various sources. When outside sources are used, this is noted in the story.
